Scaling and discriminability of perceived gloss

چکیده
While much attention has been given to understanding biases in gloss perception (e.g., changes perceived reflectance as a function of lighting, shape, viewpoint, and other factors), here we investigated sensitivity surface reflectance. We tested how visual differences specular varies the magnitude Stimuli consisted renderings glossy objects under natural illumination. Using maximum likelihood difference scaling (MLDS), created perceptual parameter Ward model. Then, using method constant stimuli standard 2AFC procedure, obtained psychometric functions for discrimination across range values derived from scale. Both methods demonstrate that discriminability is significantly diminished at high levels reflectance, thus indicating depends on change image produced by different values. Taken together, these experiments also suggest internal sensory noise remains suprathreshold near-threshold intervals which supports use MLDS highly efficient evaluating sensitivity.

The detectability, discriminability, and perceived magnitude of painful electrical shock.
Thresholds for sensation, pain, and tolerance were obtained from 20 male and 20 female observers who received trains of electrical pulses applied to the volar forearm. Also determined were estimates of sensory magnitude for a series of stimuli that spanned the pain sensitivity range (PSR) between pain threshold and tolerance, as well as Weber fractions for the discrimination of stimuli at the m...
متن کاملDifference scaling of gloss: nonlinearity, binocularity, and constancy.
Gloss is an attribute of visual appearance that originates from the geometrical distribution of the light reflected by the surface. We used the maximum likelihood difference scaling (MLDS) procedure (L.T. Maloney & J. N. Yang, 2003) to estimate gloss scales over an extended range. Observers' judgments were obtained for a series of 10 black, coated samples for two directions of illumination, in ...
متن کاملStatistical correlates of perceived gloss in natural images
It is currently debated whether the perception of gloss is linked to the statistical parameters of the retinal image. In particular, it has been suggested that gloss is highly correlated with the skewness of the luminance histogram. However, other psychophysical work with artificial stimuli has shown that skewness alone is not enough to induce the perception of gloss. Here, we analyzed many ima...
متن کاملGenerative constraints on image cues for perceived gloss.
Image structure is generated by distinct physical sources that include 3-D surface geometry, surface reflectance, and the light field. A fundamental problem in midlevel vision involves understanding how, and how well, the visual system separates images into their underlying sources. A large body of recent work has shown that the perception of gloss exhibits significant dependencies on both 3-D ...
متن کاملScaling perceived saturation.
Two psychophysical experiments were conducted at North Carolina State University (NCSU) and Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) to obtain replicated perceived saturation data from color normal observers on the order of one unit of saturation. The same 37 Munsell sample sheets, including up to four references that had similar perceived saturation but different hue, were used in both experime...
